Alongside theory formulation and experimentation, the simulation of complex, socially relevant problems has long been the third pillar of science. The simulation of complex systems is a vital tool for gaining insights on all kinds of subject matters, including climate, energy, health, nutrition, mobility, security and communication. The same rule applies for all fields of application: The greater the complexity of the scenario being simulated, the higher the level of computing power required. High performance computing (HPC) is a term used to describe computing architectures that are vastly more powerful than individual PCs.

HPC is foundational for precise simulations, which is why it is one of the main reasons for the success of Germany’s research landscape – and for many parts of its industrial economy. High-performance computers are helping to keep Germany and Europe at the forefront of key technologies and to boost the competitiveness of scientific and economic activity in Germany and Europe  . In order to maximise the potential of HPC, Europe needs to retain and build on the competencies required for setting up and operating these systems. This is particularly true of the hardware that is needed. In order to take pole position in this important area of technological research, a joint European effort will be required.

Advising, Analysing, Promoting and Organising

We advise our clients on the development of concepts for strengthening the HPC sector. Our activities are particularly focused on the areas of overlap between public authorities, industry and research. This is because we are seeking to successfully transfer HPC expertise, which historically has been primarily concentrated in the academic sector, to the industrial sector. We have specific insight into the hardware/software interface, an important area where we benefit greatly from our extensive experience in the field of electronics.
